Developing Governor’s Cup News

The recent news about Robert Morris becoming the fourth team to compete in the Governor’s Cup (an annual tournament hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Union College.  The Cup began in 2006 and is intended to increase interest in the ECAC Hockey League. In the previous two tournaments, no team outside of the ECAC conference has competed, Robert Morris would be the first to do so) an inside source has informed me that this was found to be true.  I was pointed into the direction of these two articles for supporting information, which can be found here: Troy Record and here in the Daily GazetteUnion College also has Robert Morris listed as a possible opponent during the Governor’s Cup.

From the Troy Record, “The Engineers have a weekday night home game against UMass on Tuesday night, Oct. 17.  Robert Morris University, with talented forward Chris Margott, will be the fourth team in the Third Annual Governor’s Cup Tournament at the Times Union Center on Oct. 24-25.  The Colonials will battle Colgate at 4 p.m. on Friday the 24th, then the Engineers clash with Union at 7.”

From the Daily Gazette, “Although it hasn’t been officially announced by the ECACH, Robert Morris of College Hockey America is expected to be the fourth team in the Governor’s Cup. And before anyone starts complaining about the Colonials being a weak opponent for Colgate, consider that they beat Boston University and Ohio State last season, and won at Notre Dame two seasons ago. Plus, Robert Morris gave RPI fits in the first round of the 2004 Rensselaer Holiday Tournament before losing, 2-0, and then beat Sacred Heart, 4-2, to finish third.”

I have also been informed that the originally planned Lefty McFadden Tournament, will not take place this coming season.  Thus, one could presume the opportunity for Robert Morris to take the opportunity to compete in the Governor’s Cup.

I thank the faithful readers for first bringing this information to everyone’s attention.  I only wanted to report it as true once solid links could be provided.
